Photo Diary From Vilnius, Lithuania's 2016 Christmas Market

Friday, December 16, 2016

The winter in Vilnius is dark and cold, so when Christmas time comes around, the lights really help to brighten up the city. This year, the Christmas market in Cathedral Square is surprisingly beautiful, easily the nicest one that I've seen. The stores in the market feature gifts and food such as bubble waffles, dried meats, Dutch pancakes, and more.

It is great go go for a stroll through the market after dark (3:30 pm!) for a great view of the lights strung up from the tree to the market stalls. It really looks great!

In 2016, the Christmas festivities in Vilnius run until December 29th, so you still have a bit of time to plan your visit!

Take a look at the Christmas markets from 2014.

What is your local Christmas market like? Does it change year to year?

  1. You took excellent photos of those lights! Last year I was living in Germany and I loved visiting the Christmas markets, but sadly the US hasn't quite figured out how to have a good one (at least in my region) yet.

    1. Thank you so much!! I love the German Christmas markets as well, but I feel I need to see more of them! I agree that the US doesn't have a ton of Christmas markets, but I've heard the market in Chicago is wonderful and I think it is worth a trip to investigate :)

  2. Lots of lights, very pretty. You just need some snow now! Our local Christmas market in Oxford isn't very big so every year I threaten to go to a proper one but I never seem to get round to it. #farawayfiles

    1. We actually have the most snow I've ever seen in Vilnius right now. This season has been a winter wonderland, which helps to perk up the very grey Lithuanian winters. I'd love to visit some Christmas markets in the UK and I'm sure the one in Oxford is really lovely even if it is small :)

    1. You guys probably have even darker, cloudier days that we do in Lithuania! It has been marvelous being back in Connecticut and seeing the sun! Seasons Greetings!!

  4. I'm not much of a Christmas market fan, but I'd love to visit Vilnius, the only Baltic capital I haven't been to :) #farawayfiles

    1. You should visit Vilnius! It is a great capital. Nice to meet someone who has spent time elsewhere in the Baltics, though :)

    1. There are some great Christmas markets in the US! I know that Chicago has a massive one and the one in Bryant Park in NYC is also really nice. Now I'm curious about Portland as well!
