Street Art in Athens

Wednesday, May 6, 2015

One of the complaints I heard about Athens prior to my recent visit was the amount of graffiti (I'm talking ugly tagging here) covering the city. From what I've noticed during my European travels, graffiti is prevalent everywhere, including on the tiny residential street that I live on in Vilnius. That being said, I didn't notice a higher frequency of graffiti in Athens compared to elsewhere in Europe. What I did notice in Athens was incredible pieces of colorful, bold, street art. I'm actually not even sure that I can pick a favorite out of this bunch. Can you? What is your favorite piece from this collection?

Which piece is your favorite? Do you like street art? Do you think there is a difference between street art and tagging (graffiti)?

  1. Ugh. I have such a love and hate relationship with graffiti. I love it when graffiti artists do well executed works in a specific part of town. But when I see ugly "tags" on a porous marble building, where it is impossible to remove it makes me sad.

Some of these photographs are just beautiful however, and I love the black and white motif throughout, must be the same artist.

ps. you are an awesome co-host so far...thank you.

    1. I agree! Tags are the worse! If I catch the taggers who write nonsense on my street I'm going to embarrass them terribly and make the repaint everything. But I do love great pieces - and would even love minis of these in my house!

Thank you! I love the linkup!

    1. Yes! I thought it was magnificent to see these beautiful murals and in the distance see the ruins of the Acropolis (or any of the other historical sites).

  3. Graffiti used to make me upset, and often still does, especially in the form of tags on beautiful old buildings. But somewhere along the way street art worked it's way into my heart; I love photographing it and looking for it in new cities. There are some fantastic ones here in your post, I especially love the one with the tree over a doorway!

    1. Thank you for commenting! I love beautiful paintings like the ones above, but I'm still not a lover of tagging.
